Wanda and her husband Daryl have relocated from New Bremen, Ohio to Salida, Colorado. Wanda now devotes even more time to art in her new studio. She continues to sculpt but also is devoting more time to painting.
The life size sculpture “Partners” (the boy leading a mule) has been installed in front of the lock keepers house on the towpath of the Miami and Erie Canal in New Bremen, Ohio. It is located near the Southwest corner of S. Rt. 66 and St. Rt. 274. Wanda’s clay original was cast into bronze by Roger Smith at Michiganartcastings.com. This bronze is now a part of the Komminsk Legacy Park.
A vacation to Sedona, AZ, in 1996 and a very encouraging husband, led Wanda Lee Dammeyer on an unexpected artistic path. Visiting art galleries and seeing sculptors work with clay captivated Wanda. This did not go unnoticed by her husband, Daryl. That Christmas he gave Wanda clay, supplies and books. Although she had some experience with watercolor painting, Wanda had never attempted 3 dimensional art. After she started experimenting with the clay, Wanda was hooked. Since then Wanda has attended workshops in Colorado and Oklahoma by renowned sculptors Evangelos Frudakis, Star York and John Coleman. She also attended a workshop on portraiture by artist Harley Brown.
Wanda is now an award winning sculptor having won both local and national awards. In 2006 she was recognized for her rodeo bullfighter sculpture, Serious Fun, by the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame at the Celebration of Western Art in San Francisco. She has also exhibited and sold in national shows in Ohio, Colorado and Iowa. Wandas work is in collections in Washington, Colorado, California, Ohio and Nevada.
Her life size version of Partners, a boy and a mule, has been installed in 2016 along the Miami and Erie Canal in New Bremen, Ohio, as part of the Komminsk Legacy Park. Wanda and Daryl have relocated from New Bremen, Ohio to Salida, Colorado.
Wanda is one of those rare sculptors that is able to breathe life into a bronze sculpture. Wandas main interest is figurative sculpture pertaining to American History. I have always been fascinated by Native American History and culture. I have a deep respect for their feelings of harmony with the Earth and all living things. Even as a child Wanda spent countless hours drawing western figures and horses. As a registered nurse, Wanda spent several years working in surgery: frequently in facial surgery. It is this knowledge of anatomy that allows Wanda to bring so much detail to her sculptures. It is only after countless hours of research that the sculpture process begins.
"I want the observer of my sculpture to see emotion and movement. I want to represent not just the body, but the soul, with each sculpture. That is my goal."
