Biography of Wanda Lee Dammeyer

Wanda Lee Sculptures

A vacation to Sedona, AZ, in 1996 and a very encouraging husband, lead New Bremen, Ohio resident Wanda Lee Dammeyer on an unexpected artistic path. Visiting art galleries and seeing sculptors work with clay captivated Wanda. This did not go unnoticed by her husband, Daryl. That Christmas he gave Wanda clay, supplies and books. After she started experimenting with the clay, Wanda was hooked. Since then Wanda has attended workshops in Colorado by sculptors Evangelos Frudakis, Star York and John Coleman. She also attended a workshop on portraiture by artist Harley Brown. She has won a number of awards at Ohio art shows and won 4th place in the 2006 Celebration of Western Art at the Grand National Rodeo in San Francisco. She has exhibited in the Loveland Sculpture Invitational in Loveland, Co.: The Iowa Sculpture Festival in Newton, Iowa in 2006, and the Botkins Invitational Sculpture Show in Botkins, Ohio in 2007 and 2008.

Wanda’s main interest is figurative sculpting, pertaining to American history. Being an RN with experience in surgery has giving her a good background in anatomy. “I particularly like sculpting Native Americans. I am a direct descendant of Pocahontas. Although this is a very “diluted” connection, I have always been fascinated by Native American history and culture. I have a deep respect for their feelings of harmony with the Earth and all living things.”

"I want the observer of my sculpture to see emotion and movement. I want to represent not just the body, but the soul, with each sculpture. That is my goal."
